Data Plans...

In order to use data from your own applications on the phone, you'll need an unlimited data plan. The following are the recommended plans...

Cingular: "Unlimited EDGE/GPRS Data" - call 1-866-cingular, and be sure to ask for the MIT "Premier" rate. It should be $29.99/month. Please post a comment if you're able to confirm this!

T-Mobile: "Unlimited GPRS/VPN" $29.99 - Call 1-877-387-4324 to change your plan. Don't let them talk you into the WAP/T-Zones for $5.99. T-Zones will let you use the web browser, but not to use data from your own applications or ones that you download.

I called T-Mobile to sort this out, and discovered that to get hold of the right person you need to dial 611 from your handset. Apparently there are certain voice plans to which you can't add the data service -- such as SmartAccess, which needs to be changed to a 'regular' plan before adding the data access.

I called Cingular today and I wasn't able to get that account over the phone. She spoke with her manager and said that they didn't offer that plan or had heard of that rate. She said that the unlimited plan was $75/month. She suggested getting a "soc code" to authorize the price.

The e-mail of the woman I spoke to is: jan.w.jones[at]

I need to talk to cingular again today to talk about the SIM cards. I'll ask about the plans again as well.
